I have been running the beta and alpha of the latest release of Kubuntu for a while now, but yesterday I went scorched earth. I backed up all of my data and wiped my drive and reinstalled with the latest version.
The first thing that I noticed was that the live cd booted very quickly. My favorite addition to the installer was the new map for the time zone setting. It is a lot easier to use and better looking than the old one.
After the install, once again, faster boot times. I went all EXT4 for this install. I am loving it so far. Most of the improvements are to KDE 4 generally. Things like easier installation of themes, my favourite feature missing from GNOME. Kubuntu has also included a new package manager, KPackageKit which is much better than Adept. At first I thought it was too simple, but it has definitely grown on me. The most unexpected aspect of the new release is that suspend and resume work flawlessly on my Toshiba Tecra A9 laptop. The last feature that does not work is using an external monitor.
All in all the Kubuntu and KDE team are to be commended for there work. Awesome job guys!!!

i have problems with linux, when i press install, it shows the kubuntu sign for about 7 minutes then has a black screen. i am using half a partition of windows vista and i wanted the other half kubuntu. i am using a dell inspiron 6400 intel centrino. PLZ email me
I am downloading Kubuntu Linux now and I am hoping it is good if it is I will tell you.
Would you know of any downloadable desktop effects? Kubuntu Jaunty rocks, btw.
Yup, finally i use Kubuntu 9.04 after use PClos2007 for a year. My hardware detected nicely by kubuntu. And my AdsL work fine, without any setting first
I would rather have Kubuntu 9.04 than the ubuntu 9.04 b/c the KDE enviroment looks better.
Thanks for the great screenshots.
I’ve worked with Kubuntu since version 7 and found it to be the friendliest linux distro v. SuSe or RedHat. However in version 8, when I expeimented with KDE 4, I thought it was too fractured and left it alone. I was hoping for a better integration of KDE 4 in Jaunty. And, that may be but I have one major hurdle to get over.
I dropped a direct broadband internet connection for an EVDO usb modem and went for a clean install of 9.04. Oops! Jaunty has no support for an EVDO connection. I say oops because Hardy-did have support with kppp. Without the Internet my computer is useless. I hope the issuse is resolved in version 10 and I can start over again.
Yea jaunty is a great step forward in desktop computing. Liked your review just one thing wrong i noticed.
Kde DOES NOT have compiz. All the window effects are done through kwin.
@Szilveszter Csaba: Desktop effects are not downloadable – they come with the window manager, KWin. New effects are often added with new releases of KDE, but you can’t just download new effects. You can install Compiz, if you like it better, although you may lose some KDE-specific integration by doing so.
Great difficulty trying 9.10 from 8.04.
I found it unworkable.
I don’t get why the K desktop would have been so totally re-invented that it would be more difficult to use and navigate….all known things seeming to have been re-invented and harder to intuit. Upgrade ran but would not re-install raw on my machine. Very problematic for a novice. I liked the former desktop. It was quick and functional. The new one was impossible and a major time waste to try and use.
Broadband internet these days are getting much faster and cheaper too. -`;
everyone wants fast broadband internet these days, i got some 5 mbps connection at home.:’*
broadband internet these days are dirt cheap, there are more and more broadband companies offering cheap service too~-*
.:” I am really thankful to this topic because it really gives great information ‘~*
*`- that seems to be a great topic, i really love it -;’
I am going to download Kubuntu Linux and see how it goes. I hope its not made more complex as in some cases this happens when a new version is released.
